37-year-old Suarez has played 142 matches for the country. Suarez made his debut in international football in 2007. In 2010, he was behind taking Uruguay to the semi-finals of the World Cup. Suarez won the Copa America the following year. He said, “I will play the last match for the country on Friday. It’s not like I’m not getting a chance in the national team due to injury or retirement. I find peace in knowing that I can retire on my own accord. I will give my 100 percent till the last match.”
Suarez will play against Paraguay on Friday. The 2026 World Cup qualification matches are underway. Uruguay also has a game left against Venezuela. That match will be on September 11. But Suarez will not play that match.
Suarez scored against Canada in the Copa America in July. He said, “I wanted my children to see that I have done great things in the jersey of the country. The last goal was very happy for them. We didn’t win the trophy. But my children were happy with my goal.”
Suarez has said he wants to retire at home. That’s why he retired after playing against Paraguay.
